Nuts are healthy but I see a lot of people in my practice over doing them and suffering from bloating, burping, acid reflux and excessive gas production. I'm talking about all sort of nuts and form, including almond flours or nut butters.
It's very easy over doing them, specially if you have the habit to sit in front of the TV with a bag of your favourite nuts.
All these symptoms occur if you don't have a good liver producing enough Bile salt (approximately 3-4gr of Bile per meal) and also the gall bladder to store all this bile. Bile is a liquid that helps to digest fats. Under normal circumstances, bile is made in the liver and stored in the gallbladder. When you eat a meal, bile passes from the gallbladder through the cystic duct and the common bile duct into the small intestine, where it mixes with partially digested food.
The gallbladder is located on the right side and being underneath the right ribcage sometimes can swell up and react to certain nuts that can irritate a nerve that goes on the right side called the phrenic nerve. It is not necessarily the nuts but it is what is in the nuts mainly called lectins, which is considered an anti-nutrients. Certain seeds, nuts and vegetables have a protective mechanism against pest and insects.
How to avoid these symptons:
1) Soak the nuts 24h in water, rinse it out and let it dry in the over for 2-3 hours in a 40-50 Celsius degree.
2) Limit the amount of nuts to max 30-40gr per meal or 1tbsp nut butter. Don't combine them together;
3) Drink apple cider vinegar with lemon and pure cranberry juice before your meals. 1tsp of vinegar, 1tsp lemon, 1 tsp pure cranberry juice and 200ml water.
4) Trying using digestive complex supplementation before your meals. I like using Intenzyme forte combined with Beta-TCP from Biotics on the days I know I'll be going over board on fat consumption. That helps the liver and gall bladder and make it easier on your gut.
